Ugly Feet…This One’s For You Chic
Our pal the Iron Chic has repeatedly stated in her fabulous Deal Breaker posts that we gals can do better than flip-flops (men too!). Do not show your bare toes unless you are headed to the beach or a backyard BBQ because no one needs to see your ugly sausages. Do not sport them with a buttoned down shirt and jeans and for heaven’s sake, do not wear them to a fancy party with a dress!
I believe our state may house the worst culprits of the flip flop wearing bunch. In fact, last week my siblings and I hung out at the park with the kids and then headed to the local watering hole for an afternoon margarita and some delicious snacks (yes, I said AFTERNOON margarita - we love our drinks in the Midwest).
So, what were we all wearing on our feet? FLIP-FLOPS. Clockwise from top, Michelle, Jessica, Michael (little bro) and Stephanie (who, in her defense, had on some spacey Keen shoes and took them off for the photos sake). Yes, Jessica is wearing jeans because she is really cold, but her feet need air. We live in Wisconsin. And for those of you unfamiliar with the Dairy State, we are not too concerned with fashion, nor are we considered very fashionable to the outside world. We hide our feet in cozy socks and winter boots throughout most of the year. We have two seasons…Winter and Summer. So, when it is Summer, our feet deserve to breathe and live life to their fullest no matter how ugly it seems to others.
We’ll try to keep our feet neatly manicured this Summer and will abide by the Iron Chic’s flippity flopping rules. All we are saying is give feet a chance! So what’s your take on the flip-flop? Love ‘em, hate ‘em or don’t give a flap.

I am a flat footed woman so flip flops and flats are the best for my feet.

Flip flops are super comfy. In fact, I wear them to work sometimes (although probably not the most appropriate thing to do, but I hide them under my desk, so who cares!) I wouldn’t wear them to parties with a fancy dress though. That might be a bit awkward.
Anyone tried out the new ‘fit-flops’? I tried them on at Bath and Body Works, they are really comfy (but pricey at 50 bucks a pair).

I don’t have any flip-flops, me toes curl under to keep them on my feet. They do have their place.
I think you can wear them with jeans. They do make fancy bedazzeled flip flops nowadays, so if they fit the clothes, go for it.
Just don’t wear your ratty old ones with something nice though.

Well, I have to say that all of your feet look well taken care of which is ESSENTIAL if you must wear flip flops.
I think I have been living in a big city too long…I went to an old friend reunion in my hometown on the weekend and I was the only person not wearing flip flops.
I will just agree to disagree with everyone and say to each his own. I speak to many people on a daily basis who are wearing flip flops and my head has yet to explode!!!!

Bunny - I don’t wear heels often either.
Laarni - I usually pronate, so I suppose I should wear shoes with more support
Linda - Yes, I saw those pricey fit-flops and wonder if they work (I’ll just stick to yoga and squats for now).
Emily - Hmm…I better get rid of my ratty old ones and yes, they are hard to keep on your feet I agree.
Angie - You go girl!
Iron Chic - I’m sorry I couldn’t resist
Your dealbreaker posts always have me rolling around laughing and when we were all hanging out in our flip flops, I thought of you. I’m so glad you are able to tolerate all of us toe exposing freaks!

I have to say that I really don’t like flip-flops. I think they have their place in an informal setting but, in my book, it’s a big fashion faux-pas to wear them anywhere else. They also just don’t look that nice, and I don’t understand their appeal, as they are pretty bad for the feet - they provide no support whatsoever. A nice, fashionable pair of open-toed sandals would look much nicer, and be kinder to your feet.

Ooops, I think Slutty is going to go off me fast now!!
I love my flipflops. I wear my black havaianas a lot in the summer - I can walk miles and miles in them.
I wouldn’t wear them with long trousers - only with shorts or a short skirt or beachwear - wouldn’t wear them to work or in any formal setting. But I do love them and my feet are always wonderfully brown.

I think I own more flip flops than pants!

I’ve spent most of my life in Florida and California. We only wear socks there if were slapping on some sneakers

Reluctant Blogger: Oh, don’t worry, my dear. What you wear on your feet is of little consequence to me because, when we meet, I’ll rip your shoes off as quickly as possible to give you a toe job!
I am a tad surprised about your flip-flop predilection, though! Just think of Audrey! I don’t think she would ever have worn them!

Wow…heated discussion about flip-flops! Although I said I think they are comfy, but ones that aren’t well-made are pretty crappy and extremely uncomfortable.
By the way, are flip-flops really that bad for you?

Natasha Said:
I personally never ever wear them, but I allow others to do so. If they go with a casual outfit, that’s fine…I actually prefer closed flats to any sandals at all though.
And you are right, whenever I go to WI there are plenty of flip-flops!
June 5th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Michelle Said:
Slutty - You’re right, they are not that fashionable and the classic Audrey would not approve (I do love her so). I have plenty of fashionable, closed toe sandals, but the flip flops are always by the door…
RB - Slutty is a good sport taking you bare-footed and all (aren’t you glad she’s back - I’m so jealous of the toe job). But you have boys, so I can understand the flip-flops even though I too pictured you in elegant footwear.
Sandy - Right on! Feet need to breath so you understand the dilemma! My feet get all hot and sweaty in closed toe shoes.
Linda - Yeah, the cheap ones can hurt and I guess the flat sole isn’t good for the foot - you need support. I wear Merrell sandals and they are more sporty with arch support. I can climb rocks and give under-ducks in them
Natasha - Haha! So you know what I am talking about. Are you horrified when you venture a few hours north of the city? Yes, I should just wear flats, but I regress to my childhood and think of my best friend who wore flats always and had the stinkiest feet (possibly because they couldn’t breathe - she needed flip-flops!).

OK, I admit that I live in flip flops during the summer. However, there is a time and place for them. I pedicure is a must and cute stylish sandals that resemble a flip flop are much more appropriate than what you wear to the beach when going out.

oh good I’m glad Slutty still loves me and the toe job - well, my breath has been taken away.
I do have a thing for expensive shoes - it is one of my weaknesses - but there is nothing like a pair of flipflops for keeping your feet cool. I only really spend a lot of money on shoes in winter - I just love boots, I have loads of the things. Summer footwear interests me less. Not that we have a bloody summer here.
June 7th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Michelle Said:
Bunny - Yeah, toenails can be quite ugly.
Beth - So true.
RB - I don’t care for Summer footwear either and prefer boots. I think that is why it’s just easy to slip on the flip flops…
